Last year's Future of Opera winner sings on TV:

The second annual "Future of Opera Vocal Competition" organized by Utah Valley Operafest, and supported by the UVU Department of Music, is dedicated to identifying, training, and showcasing classical vocal talents in high school-aged singers. This event offers participants the chance to earn cash prizes, vocal scholarships, training, and invaluable performance opportunities. Mark your calendars for this year's competition, scheduled for April, 2024 at Utah Valley University!

 Eligibility:

The competition is open to all singers aged 14-19 (as of April 5, 2024).  An extensive background in classical singing is not necessary, as this would be fairly rare in a singer of this age group. We are searching for individuals with potential in the field. Applicants might include those who have prepared for the state Solo and Ensemble Competition, choral or musical theater singers, or sterling scholar applicants. Participants may include those who have already studied voice privately, or those brand new who show an interest. We want to recognize and assist those with raw talent and showcase them in multiple performing opportunities!

Requirements:

Singers should prepare two classical art songs or opera arias. One selection must be in a foreign language. If necessary, one selection may be a classical or golden-age musical theater song sung in a classical manner. Contemporary songs and styles such as belt, pop, rock, etc. are not the right fit for this competition.

Competition details:

This year's competition will be in a public recital format. All confirmed singers should dress in semi-formal performance attire (nice dresses and suits, but gowns and tuxedos are not necessary). Singers should arrive at the NuSkin Recital Hall in the Noorda Center on UVU campus at 6;30pm on Friday, April 5th, 2024. Participants are encouraged to invite family and friends to the performance. There will be a brief awards ceremony at the conclusion of the competition.  A professional pianist will be provided, however singers may also bring their own.
